SCAM ALERT: FAMILIES OF VETERANS TARGETED BY MILITARY FUNERAL HONORS SCAM
The Guardians of the National Cemetery Foundation want to alert veterans, their families, funeral directors, and our community to a scam targeting families following the death of a veteran.
Scammers are posing as Honor Guard members, military representatives, government agencies, or other official organizations and contacting families to demand payment for military funeral honors. They may also ask for credit card, banking, Social Security, or other personal information.
MILITARY FUNERAL HONORS ARE PROVIDED AT NO COST TO THE VETERAN’S FAMILY
Military funeral honors are an earned honor available to eligible veterans. There is never a charge to the veteran’s family for military funeral honors.
The Guardians will never contact a family to request or demand payment for military funeral honors.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
If you receive a call or message claiming that payment is required for military funeral honors:
Do not make a payment.
Do not provide financial or personal information.
Do not let the caller pressure you into acting immediately.
Hang up.
There is no legitimate reason for anyone to contact a family and request payment for military funeral honors.
If you receive such a request, report the suspected scam to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.FTC.gov.
PLEASE SHARE THIS WARNING
A family honoring the life and service of a veteran should never have to worry about being taken advantage of during such a difficult time.
