Honoring the Life and Service of Robert J. Miles (Click Here)

Updated: Mar 8

Robert J. Miles, longtime resident of Hatboro, passed away July 11, 2022 in his home.

He was surrounded by family and loved ones and was at peace at the time of his passing. Preceded in death by his parents Mary (nee Lannon) & Norman Miles and his loving wife, Joan Miles (nee Huenke), Bob leaves behind his beloved sister Margaret Healy (nee Miles), his loving children Karen Fisher (Terry), Kathy Pezok (Leeon) and Norman Miles (Emily), 10 grandchildren, 4 great granddaughters, many friends and extended family.

Born in Shenandoah Valley, PA, Bob spent his early childhood years just down the road in Frackville. In 1954 his family re-located to Warminster, PA and he later graduated from Wm. Tennent with the Class of 1960. Enlisting in the Navy, he hoped to see the world and learn a trade at the same time. He did learn a trade as he was assigned to be an Aviation Electrician's Mate, but seeing the world wasn't in the cards at the time. After training, he found himself sent right back home, stationed at Willow Grove Naval Air Station. His disappointment faded shortly thereafter when he met Joan, the love of his life, at a local roller skating rink, whom he married on August 16, 1969. With an eye on supporting his wife and starting a family, he utilized the benefits available to him through the GI Bill and, with Joan's full support and encouragement, enrolled in Penn State to secure a degree in his field. He was honorably discharged in 1970 (Petty Officer, 2nd Class) and shortly thereafter graduated with a degree in Electrical & Electronics Technology. He accepted a job offer from Philadelphia Electric Company, and he enjoyed a successful career until his retirement.

Bob's accomplishments and contributions are far too numerous to list. To name just a few-He was a Life Member of Enterprise Fire Company, Hatboro. A volunteer firefighter for many years, he then shifted his attention to the medical side of first responding. After receiving his Paramedic certification he began volunteering with the ambulance service in 1978. He was the first paramedic in Hatboro and he took his responsibilities seriously, responded to every call he possibly could. It was not unusual for him to respond to multiple calls overnight, return home, change clothes to leave immediately so he didn't miss his train to work. He further volunteered his free time to train anyone interested in joining the Ambulance Service and through his efforts, helped add additional volunteers to the ranks over the years. He volunteered with the Red Cross often, never turning down a request for help in any capacity requested of him. First he learned to SCUBA dive, then he kept on going until he achieved his certification as a Master Diver as well as an instructor for beginner, advanced and rescue diving classes. As a member of the non profit organization H. E. A. R. T. 911, he traveled to New Orleans, LA to repair/rebuild homes for several victims of Hurricane Katrina. He spent untolled hours at the Wings of Freedom Aviation Museum in Horsham, restoring vintage aircraft, He was very proud to be a member of the Honor Guard (Guardians of the National Cemetery) at Washington Crossing National Cemetery and was honored to play a small part in their mission of providing every service member the respect and recognition they deserve at the time of their passing. Amongst all of the above (and more), He was a loving & devoted husband who worked every available minute of 15 years (without a word of complaint) to build their family home into everything he and his wife had ever hoped for. He was an involved and loving father. He was a true role model to his children and anyone else who needed one. He was also a loyal friend, available to help at a moments notice and never accepting any compensation for his help. We don't know how he found the time to do everything he did, or the energy to do it all so well We do know that we are very grateful that he did.You are invited to celebrate Bob's life Wednesday, July 27th 6pm-8pm (public welcome) and Thursday, July 28th 10:30-11:30am (public welcome) followed by a brief memorial service at Decker-Givnish Funeral Home, Warminster.
